Hi, I'm Sara!
Sara Thomas
Licensed Master Social Worker
I think it’s agreeable to voice that life is not always easy. This makes sense in light of how many obstacles we face in our lives. Starting therapy can help confront these problems so they are eliminated or reduced in power, but it is normal for the ability to do that to seem daunting. And even when you want change in your life, change is often challenging and uncomfortable. I’m aware of this, so I aim to sit with you during those challenges and discomfort in a safe space, giving you room to navigate and process these feelings and thoughts.
I’m deeply interested in helping people alleviate suffering. My experience comes from a medical background in clinical social work, so I’m passionate about helping those severely ill or aging. With understanding how real dark experiences can get in life, serious challenges push me to find ways to help others find relief. In my past learning strategies such as biofeedback and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy opened my mind to the reality of how techniques really can improve body functioning, support positive feelings, and enable beneficial choices to experience something truly good.
In practice, I believe in a Strengths-based perspective. This approach assists in identifying and emphasizing the strengths we’ve identified in our meetings together. I understand when struggling or suffering, believing you are strong in any area can seem difficult to wrap the mind around. So I use Motivational Interviewing skills to help discover what has helped sustain you to this point of your life, navigate those strengths while acknowledging what has oppressed you, and highlight what motivates you to hope for anything better to happen. I don’t work on you, I work with you, as I am here to listen, care, and help you get to where you want to be. I want you to feel valued and supported as you strive to find more light in your life.
I have experience in working with adults and the geriatric population with an emphasis on end-of-life care. My strengths-based methods are also helpful for youth and young adults through transitions in life stories, depression, grief and loss of a former reality, and the stress that is experienced due to doing life often being an effortful process.
I am already looking forward to joining you on your journey to self-discovery and positive changes!
